Northland Hip Hop Dance Inc, is a not for profit incorporated society which was established in 2007 to provide opportunities, logistical and financial support to Northland youth and children who show excellence in Hip Hop Dance. Each year since 2007, crews of Northland youth have been selected to train for both entertainment performances and regional, national and international competitions – notably Kani Krew and Encore. Having sent teams to four World Championships (3 in the USA and 1 in Netherlands) and three Asia Pacific Championships in Australia, Northland Hip Hop Dance Inc. have experience preparing and sending teams to compete internationally.
Alongside competition, Northland Hip Hop Dance supports and actively participates in local community events and youth focused initiatives. We are proud of the achievements of Kani Krew and Encore over the past 4 years as the dancers have developed into role models for other children and youth in their communities. In January 2007 our dancers featured in a Northland District Health Board community promotion video encouraging children to ‘wash their hands’. They have appeared on Maori Television, performed at the 2008 Children’s Day Festival, 2010 Youth Festival, Waitangi Celebrations, the Ngapuhi Festival 2009, the Northland Secondary Schools Sports Awards 2008 and numerous school, gala, charity and other community performances where they make a positive impact on children and youth they interact with.
Annual auditions are held in November/December to select members for Kani Krew and Encore crews for the following 12 month period. Parental support is a key component of the success of Northland Hip Hop Dance Inc. and parents are required to commit to fundraising for the full costs of the year’s dancing commitments. “Northland Hip Hop” relies on the support and generosity of family, friends and fans of crew members and of the wider Northland Community.
Annual General Meetings are held in October each year and 2011 office-holders are:
- Annalise Wood – Chairperson
- Mariameno Kapa-Kingi – Secretary
- Cheryll Pitman – Treasurer
